Nisha Haq Photography > The Secretary's Chair

For my Chair project (March 2011-) I first focused on fashion photography and using the chair as a prop for various fashion shoot. After all my fashion research I decided to finally shoot in the studio drawing inspiration from Willy Vanderperre’s photos of Lara Stone and Liv Tyler, Giovani Squatriti of Caterina Murino and Nick Knight’s Then Now Next feature for i-D magazine. I liked the simplicity in all these shots and their use of black and white. I have recently done a lot of photos in colour and thought it would be nice to return to the wonders of greyscale. I also decided monochrome would suit these photos better as the outfit I chose for my model, Lauhren Jones would stand out much better especially as they were black and white clothes. I did this shoot in March 2011 in my college photography studio.

 

I was inspired by the Chanel look and with a classy translucent material Asos blouse teamed with a bow tie (M&S), high heeled lace shoe boots and elasticated black mini skirt from New Look with hold ups and stockings (vintage); I wanted to fuse elegance and sexy which lead me to the idea of a secretary especially after looking at this film poster from 2002. I wanted to play on office fantasies and stereotypes of female secretaries whilst retaining the fashion element. On some of the shots I didn’t want them to be too sexy and wanted to portray an easy going lady despite the constricting garments.

Inimtacy Photography Project Final Pieces

Hey Everyone.

I put doing a fair amount of photography work with new projects and shoots. This entry will focus on my final piece prints for my A Level Photography course. This project I looked at intimacy and the different ways it can be portrayed photographically. In the end I decided to create a mock magazine 'Obscura' (as in Camera Obscura, Latin for dark chamber aka a camera) and create very minimalistic alternative front covers. I used photographs I had edited from this project as part of my final piece and presented it in magazine layout with little text so more emphasis was on the images. Tell me what you think (btw, I got an A for this project! Woop!) :D

Nisha Haq Photography > Gustav Klimt - The Kiss recreation

Hi everyone!

I've been fairly lazy with posts for the past few days however been busy with edits and new projects and photo shoots! I've finally edited my modern interpretation of Gustav Klimt's 'The Kiss' image. For my A2 photography class assignment we had to recreate an iconic image and originally I was going to choose Steve McCurry's 'Afghan Girl' however after realizing many people were using that image as their original source of inspiration thought I'd try something completely different and choose this beautiful painting. This was quite a fun shoot to do and I chose lovely real life couple: Lauhren Jones & Dan Ecclestone. Very kind of them to agree to this and they look adorable together here! Dan even carried a ladder to Lauhren's bedroom (she lives round the corner from me) so I could get a high above angle to shoot down. Also they were great to work with despite my often confusing direction (trying to recreate the poses in the image) they grasped the concept very quickly and got right into it which is always the right attitude to work with. Thanks guys!

It was rather a pain to edit this considering the original image was messy with objects and unnecessary things in the picture. There was a lot of cloning and airbrushing done but I eventually got there. I realize this image isn't perfect and there could be extra Photoshopping done however as a first go I believe its ok. Gustav Klimt's - The Kiss

Here's an excerpt from my essay for part 1 of our photography project: 'Why The Kiss is such an iconic Image':

For this project I have decided to create a modernised version of Gustav Klimt’s, ‘The Kiss’ painted in 1907-08 which is one of the most beautiful oil paintings I have seen. It’s one of Klimt’s most recognizable pieces and is the pinnacle of his ‘Gold Period’. I later saw a very iconic image by Annie Leibovitz of John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the front cover of Rolling Stone, Jan 1981 issue which reminded me of ‘The Kiss’ as the bodies were in similar shapes however Leibovitz cleverly and artistically reversed the gender roles. These two images shows intimacy, sensuality and emotion captured never before and I’m captivated by the raw beauty and how the two are very different but share similarities as well. By selecting two very famous images, one a painting the other a photograph shall give me the freedom, creative burst and the best aspects of different art mediums yet also a challenge to recreate a 21st century interpretation in my own style...

... Why choose ‘The Kiss’? There are many great aspects in this painting, one noticeably being the vibrant gold leaf he used with the oil paints and distinctive symbols and colourful flowers. This image features in my mother’s bedroom and I always find it fascinating to look at every time I walk in. The pure intimacy of the moment and how Klimt manages to paint all the small details from her shoulders hunched in from ‘breathing’ him in and embracing his sensual touch to his hands passionately grasping her jaw and head. Her feet peeping out of the elaborately decorated dress is a wonderful touch to the painting and adds character and a greater story. This theme of intimacy follows on nicely from my previous Exposed project where I explored themes of voyeurism and desire. This project will be about the softer side in a relationship and the way people connect and interact with each other.

Nisha Haq Photography > Shades of Sex ft. Lauhren Jones

Last Sunday I did a shoot with my friend, Lauhren Jones who you may recognize from my Durleigh Bikini Shoot in June and Punk Vintage Shoot I did in May. This shoot was for my A level photography where I've chosen to do narrative fashion photography with inspirations from Ellen Von Unwerth, Helmut Newton, Ren Rox, Akif Hakan Celebi, Alessandro Zuek Simonetti, Daemian Smith & Christine Suarez amongst many others. I wasn't too sure how I was going to shoot Lauhren, however after seeing the Exposed exhibition at the Tate Modern I was inspired! I didn't want to take pretty pictures, I wanted a raw edge to them that told a story. I shot these on black/white 35mm film, I developed the film at college, scanned the negatives in and edited it on Photoshop CS2.

Durleigh Bikini Shoot

I did a bikini fashion shoot recently in June 2010 with my gorgeous friends, Lauhren Jones and Kim Dibble who were a joy to work with and were great models! I had worked with Lauhren numerous times and we had always managed to click with great ideas. She's a natural poser and very photogenic. Kim, on the other hand was the first time she modelled and that I had worked with her, however after loosening up she gave me beautiful expressions and understood quickly what I was visioning. Altogether being my second fashion shoot went rather successfully despite the battery being very low for the whole shoot and eventually dying on set!

I went location scouting the day before the shoot and managed to find a vast wheat field that was a wonderful backdrop especially on a beautiful sunny day. It was very fortunate that the set wasn't too far away from where I lived in Durleigh, Somerset, UK. It was very funny and awkward on set at the beginning as this was the first time the models had done a bikini shoot in a 'public place' (there wasn't anyone around but we didn't know that) and so being confident and radiant was difficult at first. Also we kept getting visions of a farmer shouting to get off his land and Lauhren and Kim would have to leg it in their bikini's!

I also found another great background scenery in Durleigh whilst on my location scout that gave a grunge feel that would work great with a fashion shoot. I stumbled across an abandoned building site that had turned rusty which was near a dusty workshop that really looked like a set for a SAW movie and what looked like an unused rover car and boat. I later realized that the supposedly abandoned site was actually private property so it was quite a thrill knowing that anyone could walk in and could get prosecuted, maybe for indecent exposure?!?! But the level of gorgeousness Lauhren and Kim were, I doubt anyone would be so harsh! haha
