Nisha Haq Photography > The Secretary's Chair

For my Chair project (March 2011-) I first focused on fashion photography and using the chair as a prop for various fashion shoot. After all my fashion research I decided to finally shoot in the studio drawing inspiration from Willy Vanderperre’s photos of Lara Stone and Liv Tyler, Giovani Squatriti of Caterina Murino and Nick Knight’s Then Now Next feature for i-D magazine. I liked the simplicity in all these shots and their use of black and white. I have recently done a lot of photos in colour and thought it would be nice to return to the wonders of greyscale. I also decided monochrome would suit these photos better as the outfit I chose for my model, Lauhren Jones would stand out much better especially as they were black and white clothes. I did this shoot in March 2011 in my college photography studio.

I was inspired by the Chanel look and with a classy translucent material Asos blouse teamed with a bow tie (M&S), high heeled lace shoe boots and elasticated black mini skirt from New Look with hold ups and stockings (vintage); I wanted to fuse elegance and sexy which lead me to the idea of a secretary especially after looking at this film poster from 2002. I wanted to play on office fantasies and stereotypes of female secretaries whilst retaining the fashion element. On some of the shots I didn’t want them to be too sexy and wanted to portray an easy going lady despite the constricting garments.

Nisha Haq Photography > Dood Looks Like A Lady

One of my most interesting and 'daring' shoots I've done to date. For 'Dood Looks Like a Lady' I decided to get my fabulous gay friend, Matt Giles to dress up as a transvestite for a an hour for my Photography chair project. After continuously seeing how the androgynous look is very in season (especially after the Andrej Pejic case of modelling both females & menswear) the fashion world is becoming more accepting and even promoting this fashionable 'transvestite' trend. This particularly intrigued me where I wanted to explore themes of burlesque styling with a modern 'twist'. I linked this in with my chair project as burlesque dancers often use a chair as part of their act so thought I'd mix these themes up.

For this shoot (shot in March 2011) I dressed Matt in my lingerie (was really funny doing this) with the aid of Lauhren Jones for dressing and some make up. I had asked him to bring in a wig just in case however chose not to use it as his neck length conditioned hair looked very silky and feminine anyway! Despite being very rushed for time as I could only book the college studio out for an hour I only had 15 minutes of good shooting. I thought Matt was a great first time model (especially in clothes out of his comfort zone!) and certainly worked the studio space and followed direction very easily. Here are some of the edited shots from the day:

Nisha Haq Photography > Ady Winter Canal Shoot I

I've been fairly slow with updating what I've been doing recently especially my latest photo shoots but I'm getting there!
I did a shoot with the lovely Ady Endicott (I love her hair and freckles) and really pleased how it turned out. Unfortunately, the male model I had booked as well couldn't make it, so was bit of a shambles as I had to change the story of the shoot last minute nevertheless Ady was great to work with and was a natural. I think this was one of the best shoots I've done so far as Ady had a lot of poses, ideas and facial expressions she offered and as a photographer, it's great to work with someone who has that natural ability; there's more variation. At the moment I've only edited 3 photos, but there's loads more to edit in my bank of photos from this fun shoot. Thanks Ady! :D

Been A Busy Bee!

Hey Guys

Apologies for my lack of blogging lately. Just checked my posts and realized I've only done 2 this month which is really bad and irregular! Must post more interesting entries! I've been surfing the net, researching artists for my A level Photography & Graphics and finding out different perspectives in my Sociology class, so there's a few topics to write about.

Also I've been busy with photo shoots lately and my rather large back log of edits that I need to do! There's so many awesome photos to choose from! I shall be posting my latest shoots very shortly however you can see some images already on my Flickr Photostream and Facebook. These get updated regularly as soon as I finish an edit. You can see my latest Flickr uploads at the side of my blog >>

I'm currently doing a project called 'Intimacy' where I've already recreated an iconic image (see Nisha Haq Photography > Gustav Klimt - The Kiss recreation) using the awesome Lauhren Jones and her boyfriend. I've also done a studio shoot with 'couples' style photography. I'm going to incorporate different styles of photography to achieve intimate portraits such as night life (e.g. clubs, parties, gigs), commercialised studio shots (e.g. couples), paparazzi theme (e.g. gossip mags& blogs) & fashion campaigns (e.g. Tom Ford, Calvin Klein). Hopefully I can get this project into motion and not to leave it to the last minute before my deadline!

This Thursday I'm going to the RAG Day (charity day event) and then the club party in the evening where I hope to take some night life style documentary photographs. Been researching on http://shootnightlife.com/ which is a great site for tips and advice. Am also taking photos in the day of people in fancy dress. I'm going as a cowgirl! Was pretty excited when I put my outfit together :)

For my graphics project I've decided to create a Feminist Art magazine. I'm going to use all my skills learnt from my current A Level subjects and hopefully get some interesting articles & the magazine created by Feb.

So a fair few projects including commissions, bookings and organizing more test shoots! Oh and my UCAS statement for University! Almost there! I've finally written my personal statement (which took forever to cut down) and all I need to do now is certify my 5 choices. At the moment I have 6 and don't know which to cut and what my first and second Uni choice. The 6 Universities I'm finding difficult to cut to 5 are: Glamorgan, Arts London, Southampton Solent, Nottingham Trent, UWE and Westminster. The italics are the universities I'm not 100% sure about. My friends are all getting offers and interviews so I thought I better get my ass in gear and get applying before it's too late! (The general national deadline is 15th Jan 2011). Cross my fingers I get a place but first I need to send my application off first! I hope to do that today! :)

In addition to all of the above I'm trying to launch my freelance business and in the process in revamping my logo (including M.A.S.H logo) for Nisha Haq Photography. I've made a Facebook page and website (currently in blog form). Hopefully I can get these sites up and running.

Anyway..lots to blog about and so little time! note to self: also review Alter Bridge, Kids in Glass Houses, 30 Seconds to Mars,

Shall keep you guys posted about new projects & ideas :P

Diary Update: Burlesque, Harry Potter, 30 Seconds to Mars, Acoustic covers...

Hey everyone :D

Well this week has certainly been a blast! Ups, downs and everything!

Monday 22 Nov
Coursework! (okay the beginning of this week was a bit boring)

Tuesday 23 Nov
Ambassador event helping out Year 9 (age 14-15) prospective students for choosing subjects at college. I lead tours of the college and was rather happy that I didn't mess up :D

Wednesday 24 Nov
My day off college and I did a photo shoot with Becky Baker from my photography class :D. It was really fun as this time I was modelling rather than shooting. I helped out with direction but was a in a weird way proud how awesome Becky did on her first model shoot. :P We shot in my lounge and in Photography class, the current assignment is to recreate an iconic image. Becky chose Whilster's Mother (Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist's Mother) by James McNeill Whistler. This is her burlesque style modern interpretation of this famous oil painting with post processing help from me & Portia Saunders. Shall post more edits from the shoot. Thanks Becky!

Forgot to write that I saw Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows Part I on Wednesday! A brilliant movie, though at times there were a few slow parts though is understandable if they're stretching the story over a two part film. The cast is as ever, amazing but the effects are mind blowing! Looking forward to part II in the summer. I really liked how dark this film was and it didn't 'try' to be overly funny. My favourite sections were when Ron had to destroy the horcrux and he saw visions of Harry and Hermione 'getting it on' (that was weird) and when the snake jumped at the screen. Also when Ron, Harry & Hermione transform themselves and go undercover in the Ministry of Magic. The ending to this first instalment was really sad (I won't give it away) and I kind of had a tear in my eye!

Thursday 25 Nov
College day was quite boring however did a photo shoot with Lauhren Jones and her boyfriend, Dan Ecclestone for my iconic image. I chose to do Gustav Klimt's The Kiss and Annie Leibovitz's Rolling Stone cover with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Shall be posting my modern interpretation soon :D

Friday 26 Nov
In the morning did a studio photo shoot with Jess Croker and her friend Charlie which was a last minute replacement as my male model didn't turn up. Charlie was great as a last minute step in and Jess was great to work with. Also hadn't done a studio shoot in ages and this time worked with projected light rather than flash and modelling lamps. Shall post edited photos very soon :D

Also planned to go and see the amazing 30 Seconds to Mars in the afternoon at 6.30pm in Cardiff's CIA however was unfortunate that my friends dropped out on the day so I had no one to go with :( which was really stressful as I couldn't go by myself and frantically had to find someone who would go with me as I had a spare ticket going with only a few hours notice. I eventually persuaded my wonderful mother to take me. The driving conditions were awful, it was snowing all the way there and were traffic pile ups on the motorways. It would normally take 1h30 mins to get there took more than 3 hours! But after a lot of travelling and perseverance to see one of my favourite rock bands... it was an awesome pay off! They were electrifying! Shall post review on rock bands I've seen in the past month :D

The Joys of the Many Expressions of 'MAMA' aka Ruby Haq.

Saturday 27 Nov
Had a huge lie in after an awesome concert 30 Seconds to Mars. Shall admit to getting up at 1.00pm! But decided to be kind of productive and sat down and wrote/ played some awesome music. Did a cover of Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars and Firework by Katy Perry. Also wrote a song called Lilly that may be used for a music video project Lauhren Jones asked to do with me. May be posted soon.

Check out my Just the Way You Are cover on Youtube in HD!!!

Sunday 28 Nov
Another uber lazy day but did finally manage to post that HD video to youtube which took like 10 hours + to upload!! Did some blogging, obsessing over Jared Leto and some research for possible blog entries. :D And how can I forget, X Factor elimination night! Glad that Wagner and Katie are gone (my least favourites), now want Rebecca to go (she's become really boring now!) and Matt to win! C'mon MATT CARDLE! :D

Have a great day folks!

Nisha Haq Photography > Chloe Kill & Car Shoot

Had a really fun photo shoot with Chloe Hodge yesterday where I shot in Bridgwater Angel Place car park, car park where Splash Swimming centre used to be and a secluded burnt down house? near Asda. I orginally had the idea of Chloe being a Kleptomaniac (an irresistible urge to steal items of trivial value) so decided to shoot in a car park where theft is fairly common. Whilst shooting it was hard to stick to the idea as portraying someone who likes to steal and pull it off realistically, especially peeking into people's cars, it kind of looked dodgy! But I must say, Chloe was a really good on the day and a natural at modelling despite having not modelled much before. It was great working with someone who has a fabulous fashion sense (she has loads of stylish clothes especially the military trend) and having a passion for fashion like me was a joy and obviously brought out the inner model in her. She's also very photogenic and I believe this is one of my best shoots to date. Thank you Chloe!

Mood board for the shoot:

Here's a few shots that I've edited from the shoot. Still loads more to come. :D

It also helped with awesome locations, especially the abandoned burnt down house (I think it was a house, it was quite creepy). Randomly found a saw so we used that for some shots. It was great location to use for a fashion shoot, was rather excited after finding this and shooting Chloe here. More to come from this location.

This was taken at the second location where Splash used to be. A random guy from the YMCA who was waiting for people let us borrow his lovely BMW to shoot with. :D More to come from this as well

All in all, a fun shoot with many edits! :D

Nisha Haq Photography > Ebony Woodland Shoot

On Wednesday did a photo shoot with my friend Ebony Bunting who has an awesome quirky fashion sense where she often wears vintage clothes. We're both on Lookbook so decided to do a photo shoot together. :D I had this idea of doing a 'Woodland Nymph' shoot with woolly knits and fur however it was awful weather with rain pelting down and were all getting wet! I managed to get a few nice shots in the rain before we decided we were too cold and went inside. I took these images at college during our free periods. I also wanted to try something new and not always shoot 'sex-ified' images and try something 'earthy', natural and soft. Ebony was great at this. My feedback from my friend, Matt who I asked to help with a reflector (however didn't need it in the end) told me I should practice more on directing which I realized on that day was pretty 'idea-less'! It's all about research, a back up plan (as I had ideas for outside but not inside) and more preparation. Practice makes perfect! :D

More shots to come soon.

Anyone Interested to Model for Photo shoot? (also looking for Hair Stylists/Make up Artists/ Stylists)

Hey Everyone

I'm looking for anyone who would be interested in modelling for fashion and portraiture test shots this Nov/Dec. Modelling experience is not necessary. Looking for males and females who aren't camera shy. Would be great if provided own clothes however sharing and 'borrowing' (aka buy then take back to shops) can be arranged too. Also this would most likely be an on location shoot so will need to be able to travel to arranged location in Somerset (Bridgwater).

Also looking for hair stylists, make up artists and stylists/designers for fashion shoots.

(If you're interested in personal or commercial shots eg, band promos, family portraits, actor/model/dancer/singer etc profiles then email me)

Model will also receive an edited photo print for free :)

Nisha Haq Photography > Shades of Sex ft. Lauhren Jones

Last Sunday I did a shoot with my friend, Lauhren Jones who you may recognize from my Durleigh Bikini Shoot in June and Punk Vintage Shoot I did in May. This shoot was for my A level photography where I've chosen to do narrative fashion photography with inspirations from Ellen Von Unwerth, Helmut NewtonRen RoxAkif Hakan Celebi, Alessandro Zuek Simonetti, Daemian Smith & Christine Suarez amongst many others. I wasn't too sure how I was going to shoot Lauhren, however after seeing the Exposed exhibition at the Tate Modern I was inspired! I didn't want to take pretty pictures, I wanted a raw edge to them that told a story. I shot these on black/white 35mm film, I developed the film at college, scanned the negatives in and edited it on Photoshop CS2.
